Google and its health subsidiary Verily are now able to use machine learning to detect an individual's risk of heart disease with about the same accuracy as the current top methods. The software uses scans of the back of a patient's eye to deduce and analyze data including blood pressure and age. The computer algorithm (which accurately predicted cardiovascular risk 70 % of the time) could bring large efficiency gains as it is a much quicker and simpler way for doctors to assess cardiovascular risk. The current top performing method which makes correct predictions 72 % of the time requires taking a blood test.
Many doctors and professors have voiced their perception of Google's approach as credible as it builds from large bodies of established research of looking at the retina to predict cardiovascular risk. Although the algorithm will need to be tested further before it could be used clinically, artificial intelligence's potential to speed up current methods of medical analysis is a benefit many are looking forward to. The project steps outside of the common application of most medical algorithms, which seek to replicate current diagnostic tools, as it conducts new analysis on previously captured data. The machine learning program was trained to look for patterns using a medical dataset of 300,000 patients which included general medical information as well as eye scans. SpaceX has just received approval for its Starlink internet broadband service from the FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who has asked his colleges to join him in supporting SpaceX's proposal. Starlink is a broadband network that will provide internet to the Earth via satellites. Elon Musk, SpaceX Founder and CEO, has stated that the new business will be used to help fund the creation of a future city on Mars. The FCC approval is expected to be the first given to an American company to use low orbit satellites to provide broadband services. SpaceX has announced plans to attach two prototype satellites to its next Falcon 9 launch on Saturday, as it seeks to begin tests of the service.
SpaceX wants to build a network of satellites of up to 12,000 satellites operating in tandem to beam down signal to the surface below. The network is expected to have two layers of satellites above the surface of the Earth(200 and 700 miles above the surface) that will operate on different frequencies to provide signal to essentially any location on the planet. The system (according to financial projections acquired by The Wall Street Journal), is expected to grow up to 40 million subscribers and bring in close to $30 billion in revenue by 2025. The integration will enable more interactive emails that feature continuously updating information. Potential applications of the new software include continuously updating flight information or retail prices that adjust in real time to show email recipients more accurate information. The AMP email integration will be available to other email providers and the first version will be targeted to bulk email senders.
Google has announced that current testers for the AMP email integration are Booking.com, Doodle, and Pinterest. Click here to read the full article. |
