SpaceX has just received approval for its Starlink internet broadband service from FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who has asked his colleges to join him in supporting SpaceX's proposal. Starlink is a broadband network that will provide internet to the Earth via satellites. Elon Musk, SpaceX Founder and CEO, has stated that the new business will be used to help fund the creation of a future city on Mars. The FCC approval is expected to be the first given to an American company to use low orbit satellites to provide broadband services. SpaceX has announced plans to attach two prototype satellites to its next Falcon 9 launch on Saturday, as it seeks to begin tests of the service.
SpaceX wants to build a network of satellites of up to 12,000 satellites operating in tandem to beam down signal to the surface below. The network is expected to have two layers of satellites above the surface of the Earth(200 and 700 miles above the surface) that will operate on different frequencies to provide signal to essentially any location on the planet. The system (according to financial projections acquired by The Wall Street Journal), is expected to grow up to 40 million subscribers and bring in close to $30 billion in revenue by 2025.
